The 3D Swiss Retainer developed by the Swiss Company Hostettler Dental AG consists of grade 5 titanium. It is fully virtually 3D modeled, using an industrial CAD software.
The key advantage of using this CAD software is that construction in all three dimensions is possible and no limits are imposed.
A retainer with very precise adjacent surfaces results, that is especially matching the upper jaw, likewise considering a scanned counterbite, i.e. at a small distance to the gingiva as well as without a bite to the opposing teeth (early contact).
The retainer is milled out of a (grade 5) titanium blank, based on the data set, by a 5-axis milling machine, using a proprietary CAM procedure.
At the adhesive points it is roughened, in order to achieve an extended bonding surface and to improve adhesive bondage.
Using the Quick-Tray transfer aid (indirect bondage system) the 3D Swiss Titanium Retainer can be glued precise and comfortable.
So far, the standard retainer versions were the elastic and hard ones made by twisted steel wires, that were providing a high retaining potential so that they were rarely breaking, but which had their down sides in terms of adaption (manual bending) and bio-compatibility.
As opposed to these, the solution with the mono-piece titanium retainers provides excellent bio-compatibility and basic material depending elasticity.
